Since Friday the 21st of October 17 year old Ben Aldred from Stoke has been on St Johns in search of its elusive thirty pound fish and I think you'll agree that he's done rather well.

Over the past ten days the road bank area on St Johns has produced a number of fish including a couple of thirties to Barry O’Connor, so when Ben arrived he was pleasantly surprised to find the "Beach" area free. The weather was looking perfect with a strong wind pushing right into the road bank, in fact certain members of the Linear Fisheries Team even pointed out to Ben that it looked that good that only a complete "muppet" would fail to catch. (The pressure was on!!!!)

Monday morning came around and a visit from Roy and Chris was in order to take the Mickey out of Ben if he had blanked, he hadn’t in fact he'd done very well for himself catching a number of fish including one of St Johns thirty pounders.

By Tuesday Ben was up to 9 fish and 3 lost. His tally included the following - commons of 15.02, 16.02 and 18lb's along with mirrors of 14.00, 16.00, 17.12, 20.01, 22.08 and a stunning 30.05 mirror.

Over his session Ben has put in 5kg of spod mix each day, this was made up of Mainlines Proactive pineapple boilies and BCUK particles along with some Dynamite ground bait. Rig wise Ben has used Carp 'r' Us short shank nailer hooks and kick back hook links, a picture of which can be seen. After speaking to Ben earlier today he told me that virtually all his runs have come at night and that he's going to stay on for a couple of nights just in case, well you can't blame him can you!!!!

We'll let you know if his success continues as the week goes on; on current form it wouldn’t surprise me if a few more lumps grace his net. Top angling mate!!!!

Be Lucky,
Chris Blunt (Fishery Officer).
